ARTIST SPOTLIGHT — CRISTIAN ROMERO

September 25, 2024 - Author: Jessica Fisher

Meet the artist who brought this speedster to life.

Cool your engines and spend some time with the talented Cristian Romero. We sat down with this card artist to learn about what went into making this dynamic and fun artwork.

Welcome, Cristian. To begin, how do you go about studying the movement/posing/anatomy of a character before you start sketching?
Cristian: Before I even start with thumbnail sketches, I start by watching small bits of the film where the character appears. Then I do half an hour of studying the character, which involves drawing expressions and poses. I like to get used to the general shapes of the character, and then after that I try to draw new poses and expressions without reference. When I feel happy with those sketches, I move on to the card thumbnailing phase. By then, I feel way more comfortable with the character, and I can experiment freely with their pose on the card.

Any fun details hidden in the card?
Cristian: For this card, I added some small details in the background that you might miss. I thought it would be fun to have a bunch of crabs trying to cross the sandy road. You can see them very, very small next to the giant wave. Also, you can see hints of sea life inside the wave to indicate that this is a real ocean full of life.

If you can remember, what is the first Disney character you ever drew?

Cristian: Yes, actually. The first Disney character I ever drew was Winnie the Pooh. The kindergarten I attended when I was a kid had lots of images of the Winnie the Pooh crew, which inspired me to try to learn how to draw him.

What’s your favorite Disney memory?

Cristian: I remember when I was a little kid, I used to ask my mom all the time to play Pinocchio on our TV. My mom even told me that I used to ask to watch it multiple times per day. For me, I just remember seeing such beautiful animation and thinking that a human couldn't have made it. This always got me imagining that maybe some magical force made those films. So, you can imagine my surprise and happiness when I found out humans could draw and make animation like that.
