Meet this talented environment artist.
Get to know artist Nicolas Ky as they tell us about their process and artistic approach to the realm of Lorcana.
How do you go about reinterpreting or creating new locations for Disney Lorcana?
Nicholas: I reinterpret locations by watching the film and trying to see how the dominant shapes can support the intent of the card. Sometimes environments are integral to the intent, and sometimes they need to take a step back for characters or actions. But the best part is throwing the rules of reality out the window. In the dreamlike world of Lorcana, rocks are floating, magic is swirling, and waves can be the size of mountains.
What are your favorite settings to draw?
Nicholas: I love painting natural environments like rocks, foliage, and clouds, because they can bend to what you need in shape and composition; especially in a game like Disney Lorcana where each ink has a unique shape language.
What’s a favorite detail you put into a card you designed?
Nicholas: In Jolly Roger – Hook’s Ship, you can see Ursula’s Lair from Ursula’s Return in the background surrounded in aggressive smoke magic. I’m excited to see how many people have noticed the easter egg!
When you play the game, what cards do you like to have in your deck?
Nicholas: Personally, location cards are my favorite as an environment artist. Plus, the horizontal layout is the first time I’ve seen this mechanic done and its great for showcasing environments!
